How do I restore hardwood floors as a DIY project. What materials do I use?

I am buying a home with hardwood floors. They don't seem to be in too bad of shape and I wish to clean and shine them.

It really depends on their condition. There is an option between a full sanding refinishing and just a regular mop and shine.

What I did on mine - I rented a sander. Not the big rotary drum sanders the pros use but a vibrating rectangular pad sander. I used one of the finer grit sand papers and went over the entire floor. I then used a tack rag to pick up any dust. I then went over with a quick drying water based polyurethane based floor finish. I applied the finish with a lambswool mop. It dried in about an hour. I was able to sand and apply 3 coats of finish in a day. They looked 100 times better than when I started and it was an easy project to do.

If they're still in good shape you can just use a wood polish.
If you want them to look brand new you must sand and refinish.
