Electric igniters: quicker, smaller, more powerful

this is a slideshow and text presentation illustrating clearly my process of making electric igniters, using only simple houshold items. (black powder can be substituted for crushed match heads if you can’t get BP)

BE SURE TO WATCH MY DEMONSTRATION VIDEO!!!

these igniters fit easily into bungers, mortars, rockets etc. work 100% of the time (when made correcty) and will cause quicker ignition than most other igniters, requiring only a 9 volt battery. (and obviously anything more powerful will work also)

cool… made a …
cool… made a video where you fire it…

i have just …
i have just uploaded the demonstration of this igniter… find it in my account.

ive made some a bit …
ive made some a bit like this but i cant get black powder in the uk so i use mashed up matchheads, thats works well too

and you connect the …
and you connect the 2 end of the wire to a battery?

Where do u get the …
Where do u get the filliament from??
But about using telephone wire?

as i illustrated, …
as i illustrated, you use steel wool, scowering wool, or if you want an igniter that is re-usable, you can use tungsten wire, found in old radiators and other appliances. tungsten can heat and then cool again without breaking… steel wool almost always breaks from the current, heat and shock from the explosion/ignition.

how much power ( …
how much power (volts & mA) do u need to make your igniter work?

voltage is not …
voltage is not relevant, unless you have a long power lead to your igniter. if it’s a long leads you’ll want high voltage, but 3V will work up to 10 feet. i use 25V which works to about 100 feet. current is teh factor that does the igniting, and i use
200MA, anythign more is good, less might become unreliable, or you may have to wait up to 1-2 seconds for ignition.

for current do u …
for current do u add on the current as in 4 batteries at 50mAh

Do u Add 50mAh + 50mAh + 50mAh + 50mAh= 20mAh OR one same current for all four batteries

well that is …
well that is defined by which of the two simple circuit principals you are using, series or parallell. if you have 4 50mAh batteries in series, the current will remain the same, and the voltage will multiply by 4. if you wire them in parallell, then the voltage will not change, and the current will be multiplied by four.

as i said earlier, …
as i said earlier, have just enough voltage to run the distance of your wiring, and the rest of your batteries can be in parallell to add more current. i will describe an example of this system:you may connect two batteries in series, and then another two batteries in series, separate from the first pair. now sit the pair side by side, and connect the two sets in parallell. this configuration will give you twice the current, and twice the voltage of a single battery.

Do you think it …
Do you think it would work with static electricity?

this variability …
this variability makes static somewhat complex, as you need a reliable consistance static source. it would however bear the advantage that you would only need to run one contact to the detonator, as you could attach the second lead into the ground, assuming you are producing a static opposing earths charge, and the earthing through the igniter would certainly set it off.

this igniter would …
this igniter would definitely work with static electricity, as static forms electrical charges no man can rival (lightning,) however static charges are susseptable to huge variations, from the highest voltages to lowest, highest currents to lowest.

however the forms …
however the forms of static you would generate from an inflated baloon, rubbing your clothes on carpet or anything of that nature would not have the capability of igniting these, as those are insubstantial static charges unless you are working with dangerous mixtures with potassium chlorate or anything highly volotile, in which case no static shoudl be within teh vicinity.

you can get …
you can get tungsten from light bulbs. You can also use Nichrome wire.

nichrome is also …
nichrome is also used in bar radiators, a common source for many pyro’s, however it’s somewhat inefficient paying $5 per lightbulb so you can smash it and have yourself almost an inch of fragile tungsten, and if it’s a mains powered light bulb, safe voltages would not heat it the slightest bit. refine your logic jixifit. dissapointing effort.

I suppose smashing …
I suppose smashing open a bar radiator is cheaper…

Yes but what would …
Yes but what would the current be if u had 2 200mAh and 2 400mAh in a series?

i’m not 100% …
i’m not 100% certain, but as far as my knowledge goes they would + to each other and give you 1200mAh, as long as the voltage is the same. if you start pairing in any way batteries of different voltage, you will get odd sideaffects and damage, so same voltage should work. i’m sorry if i cannot answer your question, as i have little experience in using different batteries within a circuit, iv’e always just used transformers for a powerful variable supply.

but how to make …
but how to make them smaller for a 3.5mm ID nozzle ? I seen a lot of vids, but all only makes it for a 20 mm hole…

figure eight wire …
figure eight wire comes in all different sizes, you simply by 1mm figure eight wire, and you can make an igniter with a total width of 2mm. also, if you place more tape on different parts of the igniter, you can shape the blast direction. when i used to make rockets i ignited them with 2mm electric igniters wrapped to make an upward cone shaped blast, so that it would travel up the sides of my core.

Thx for answer.

Thx for answer.
I have CAT5 network wires with 2.5 mm and for the …hm how to say it…for the melting part i use a 0.15 mm but its hard to handle with it because its very flexible..so i must find an other soloution. Any ideas? THX

pencil lead works.i …
pencil lead works.i put lead then a match head or what ever you want touching the pencil lead and it works really good
